I have quite a morning ahead of me today, all of which will result in my having to move my work on comics pages to the afternoon or evening, which are my least favorite times to start making pages.
After I drop my son off at school we need to take our eldest cat, Mugsy, to the vet. Two nights ago he was showing signs of distress with his mouth, preventing him from eating without discomfort. With no availability yesterday, the earliest appointment we could get him was this morning. The poor old man didn’t eat much all yesterday despite wanting to, and kept himself in relative seclusion while uncomfortable. I’m hoping it’s something simple like an infection or at worst a fractured tooth, and not a symptom of something more serious. I’m a worrisome cat dad and my imagination has been running away with me on this. In all the thirteen years we’ve had Mugsy we’ve never seen him sick, so this is a bit jarring, even if it is (hopefully) something minor.
Thirty minutes later is Normandy’s inaugural visit to our local vet, for no other reason than to give her an official checkup/physical there since her adoption. The cat rescue made certain she was up-to-date with her various shots and vaccines but it’s important to get her “in the system” with our local veterinarian, as it were.
My wife and I are trying to determine how best to handle the two cats with two appointments so close together.
A short time after that my son gets out early from school today, because it’s also parent-teacher conference day! Honestly I like conference day, despite the early dismissal from school. It’s nice to check in with teachers to see how our son is performing in class, and gives me insight into who they hang out with all day. Thankfully I’ve been a fan of most of my son’s teachers throughout the years and getting a chance to speak with them one-on-one, if only for a few minutes, is an opportunity I rather enjoy.
And if our earlier vet visits don’t go smoothly, it will be nice to have some brief human interaction as a distraction.
I’ll have the later afternoon and evening free to do the work I need on future pages, but as I said I dislike getting started that late in the day. I don’t mind if my work takes me into the afternoon and evening, but I vastly prefer getting started in the morning. It feels nice to be creative with the early morning sunshine. Even if I have a valid reason for starting later, like I will today, it still feels like “slacking off” to me, even though I know better.
Wish me luck today, and cross your fingers all the news we receive, from the vet to the teacher, is good news.
