Becoming A Holiday Commercial

Thanksgiving is coming up this week for those of us here in the United States, and while Thursday is a day of feasting and togetherness with family, the very next day signals a shift in the holiday season. Most call it Black Friday here, but I’m not going to do any “Black Friday deals” or anything like that.

My least favorite part of my life as an independent cartoonist is turning myself into a commercial to get you folks to buy my books. I try to avoid that as much as possible online, only going so far as leaving links to my store fronts on the front page beside the comics as a hopefully unobtrusive reminder that I’ve got stuff for sale. At conventions I’m not an aggressive salesman, and I let folks who come by browse my books at their leisure and only chat about my stuff when they ask first.

But the holiday season past Thanksgiving is a different creature altogether.

Next Monday… do they still call it Cyber Monday?… I’m going to be putting an announcement on the front page in place of a comic announcing a holiday bundle deal for the complete set of Snout’s adventures, as well as the opening of commissions. The comic meant for Monday will post on Tuesday, then Wednesday’s and Friday’s comics will post normally.

Like I said, I don’t normally like doing that but these days you have to become that commercial at least a few times.
