The title of today’s brief blog says it all. Today is my favorite holiday of the Big Three and despite my having to run to Providence to drop off my merch for Rhode Island Comic Con tomorrow I’m looking forward to celebrating tonight.
Halloween is my favorite holiday not because of the spooks and scares (as stated in a previous blog Halloween is mostly about sweets and smiles for our family), nor because of a love of elaborate or creative costumes. Halloween is my favorite because it still evokes that childlike wonder in me, even moreso than Christmas or Thanksgiving.
As you get older, Thanksgiving and Christmas become more of a responsibility than a holiday. There’s food to buy and prepare for Thanksgiving once you’re an adult, along with the increasing risk of mood-ruining political conversations (especially with the election next week here in the U.S.) to be had. Christmas is an even bigger stress, with needing to buy and afford enough holiday gifts to help make your kid feel like they’re having that magical Christmas morning.
Halloween remains the same even as you get older and have kids. You can still dress up in a costume. You can still go trick-or-treating as you escort your kid from door to door. And if you don’t have kids you get to become a part of that magical night by handing out candy, which is the most vital role of Halloween night. There are no added responsibilities. The mood and the pressure doesn’t change as you grow older. Halloween night remains the same no matter your age.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
