Halloween is this Thursday and I couldn’t be more excited. It’s not for any special reason, mind you. I’m always excited for Halloween, and that enthusiasm has only grown since becoming a father. But what is normally a festive holiday is going to be mildly busy this year, for scheduling reasons.
This weekend I make my return to Rhode Island Comic Con, which I am also excited for! However, Halloween is on Thursday, and the convention begins that very next day. You can see why this complicates things.
Thankfully it’s only a mild complication, and even calling it that is being dramatic. Providence, RI is only about an hour from where I live, so it’s not like I’m traveling for a convention that requires hours on the road or planning a trip to the airport. And the convention starts late enough in the afternoon on Friday that I don’t have to worry about early-morning travel.
But I am a creature of habit and it’s my preference for having my merch dropped off the night before the convention that’s adding this mild complication to my Halloween. So my holiday is going to go something like this:
Drop my kid off at school. Drive out to Providence depending on when the morning rush hour traffic clears up. Check in with the convention staff and find my table. Drop off my stuff and maybe do some mild setting up, depending on how much time I have. Account for the time needed to drive back home in time to pick my son up from school. Once that’s all done, I can finally enjoy Halloween.
Like I said, it’s not a lot and it’s not terribly hectic, but even a little bit of responsibility on what is a major holiday for my family (and many others) feels like more than it is.
