This is not the first time I’ve drawn the courtroom scene playing out in these current pages of The Legacy. Folks who have supported my Patreon got to see this scene about a year ago in a series of updates called “Dominic and the Dwarves.” This version has been reworked slightly to fit the current narrative, as plans and details often change over the course of a year.
For those of you who have missed the Oracle for Hire cast, they appear monthly in the Epilogue Comics support tier. When I first launched the Patreon years ago, they were just snapshots of what those characters were doing in the years following their adventures. As the months went on and I was getting more comfortable drawing comics again after a seven-year break, I wanted to expand upon those snapshots. Standalone pictures became standalone comics, and finally I fell back into old habits and started making lengthier narratives.
“Dominic and the Dwarves” helped me get a sense of what it would be like to actually draw dwarves as characters and establish Kadaz as a place. The Patreon usually serves as a jumping-off point for me, where characters who will eventually turn up in The Legacy are given their first drafts. Makena has appeared several times there across a few support tiers. On top of that, story elements are worked out far in advance.
The folks who support the Patreon at the Epilogue Comics tier already know who Cresca’s father is, for example.
Is this whole blog post an excuse to plug my Patreon page? Probably. But if when you’re an artist these days, sometimes you just have to shamelessly advertise what you’re up to.
