The scary door. October 25, 2012 Posted by Mookie
The blood vanishing from Dominic's head in the second half of today's comic is not a continuity error. It was done on purpose.

That's pretty much all the relevant news I had to report today. I'd considered not doing a news post at all today, but I felt clarifying what could have been perceived as a mistake on my part warranted a post.

So here are some random-ish things to fill up some space down here! I hope you folks find them entertaining, if nothing else!

- My niece is adorable.
- I'm really excited to be returning to both YOUMACON and BAKURETSUCON next month!
- Garth and I will be at KATSUCON next year promoting our new webcomic!
- I have nifty in-laws. They bring me cupcakes.

That's all from me for now.

Healing through music. October 24, 2012 Posted by Mookie
Gregory uses music to cope with tragedy, even if it isn't always appreciated. The werewolves of House Danovich look happy enough, though.

"Live for the Kill" by Amon Amarth plays in my head when I think of werewolf fight songs. It's a great song that's all about wolves hunting and not being sorry about it at all. Pretty metal, and there's even a cello break featuring Apocalyptica. I was even going to use one of the lyrics as the title of the song that Gregory was about to sing, but instead of using it verbatim I warped it a little.

Both last week and yesterday there were no news posts. Normally I try to have something for you folks to read down here, even if I have very little to say. A few people advised me to just not to a news post when there's no news to report, so I think I'll give that a try. Not everyone always reads the updates down here, anyway. There are still some folks who don't know that the comic is ending on or around May 2013!

A better confession. October 22, 2012 Posted by Mookie
Jacob's dialogue in today's comic was originally going to be spoken during the zombie attack, just before he went all corpse armor and broke free of the swarm. The wordiness of it would have slowed things down, so I opted to save it for later. I think it works better as a confession, especially to a woman he's been at odds with for so long.

This week is looking to be pretty mellow, and that's good. Next week is going to be eventful.

It begins with the first anniversary of my wedding...

Then it's Halloween, my absolute favorite holiday of the year...

It concludes with my return to YOUMACON! I'm not listed on the Guests page (as of this writing), but I will be there as a Guest selling books (as well as a limited number of scarves) and doing panels. I had a great time there last year and I can't wait to go back! Be sure to stop by and say "hi" if you're in the area!

That's all from me for now.

Little mage. October 18, 2012 Posted by Mookie
This could have been yesterday's comic, and things may have moved along faster because of it, but I really wanted to get that full-page image out of my head.

In other news...

- We had a great time hanging out with you in a non-convention setting, Garth! It was great to talk comic books, video games, superheroes and science fiction; and to watch awesomely bad movies. Come back and visit us again soon!

- Our new place now has a proper amount of furniture! These are the kinds of things you get excited about when you're rocking the domestic life.

- It looks like a monster has taken over our front porch. I love good Halloween decorations.

- I am a terrible gunzerker.

A sense of scale, and relative silence. October 17, 2012 Posted by Mookie
For such a simple comic, I had a lot of trouble coming to terms with making this update as simple as it is.

Much of today's comic is blank, and I've done this before during Dominic's episodes of Seer's Shroud. I wanted to make today's comic wordier, but I felt the dialogue was cluttering up the empty space and taking away from the effect of making Miranda look small in the absence of Masutel's normally vast mental power. So, following the advice of my friend Garth I decided to make today's comic rather brief in dialogue to showcase Miranda and Masutel's diminished size, and to have one of those poignant moments that I adore so much. I hope you fine folks enjoy it, too.

In other, nerdier news from Garth's visit...
- Beastmaster is an amazing movie that stands the test of time. The silent, fleshy bird-men creatures that eat you with their wings are still creepy after all these years.
- The Kentucky Fried Movie is one of the funniest movies ever made. Period.

Size doesn't matter? October 16, 2012 Posted by Mookie
Many of Masutel's appearances have been big. Whether it was the first time he spread his wings or flying over the desert or destroying a cathedral, Masutel's size has always taken up a few panels. So I felt it was only right to dedicate a lot of room to his mindscape, only to find him reduced to a miniscule speck on the ground. I think it's visually dramatic, and I hope you folks think so, too.

I have the pleasure of entertaining the wonderful and talented Garth Graham as a house guest over the next few days. We're going to talk about superheroes, science fiction and outer space. I may be able to convince him to share more concept art from our forthcoming webcomic project, too! Maybe.

In other, nerdy news...
- I love my mechromancer.
- The pandaren are charming.
- Razzle-fraggin'-flarking Collectors.

The shadow over Capitol City. October 15, 2012 Posted by Mookie
The FAN ART PAGES have finally been updated again! There are some great new pieces to look at, so be sure to check them out! And while you're there, be sure to check out all the older artwork that has been showcased throughout the years! Every so often I like to click through the fan art archives, like I link to old comics, as a trip down memory lane.

While there's no more email address dedicated solely to fan art submissions, you can still send your artwork to my current email address. I'll still see, and eventually display, whatever you fine folks send my way!

Speaking of emails, I appreciate everyone who sent me "votes" on Halloween costume ideas! After some costume shop adventures this weekend, my wife and I hit upon an idea that was far from any of the previously mentioned ideas. Alyssa's a crafty lass and is helping me make this costume. As to what it is, you'll just have to wait for me to post a picture somewhere.

I may or may not take Halloween off. I've done it before, and I'm feeling particularly festive this year. I haven't decided yet, but I'll let you folks know closer to the holiday itself whether there will be filler in place of a comic that day.

She can kill you with a look... and her fists. October 12, 2012 Posted by Mookie
Miranda's use of her Evil Eye has usually been played for comic effect, but the thing has range and power. It can go around corners and it's even interdimensional. It's brought orcs and spellwolves to their knees. I didn't want it to have such a crippling effect on King David, but I still wanted him to feel it a little.

No one is safe from Miranda's Evil Eye.

And it's probably unwise to get her this mad. When her family is in this much danger, she's capable of killing you with her bare hands.

I hope everyone has a nice weekend! My wife and I are looking forward to decorating our new place with the usual Halloween ornaments. Spider webs, jack-o-lanterns, skeletons, and other classics.

That's all from me for now.

Are you sure you saw what you saw? October 11, 2012 Posted by Mookie
The King does his best to make sure he has the upper hand.

I probably could have achieved the same "illusory" effect by turning one panel of yesterday's comic into that grotesque scene, but I felt a comic dedicated to the illusion was more effective. It did slow things down somewhat for those of you keeping with the updates on a day-to-day basis, but in the long run I felt it was a more dramatic choice.

The update schedule of the comic has been mentioned to me a few times at conventions. It was suggested that, instead of updating once a day, I update once a week but with five comics all at once. It's an interesting idea, and it's one that Garth and I are considering with our upcoming sci-fi superhero webcomic's update schedule. But in these final months of Dominic Deegan, I think I'll just stick with the once-a-day update schedule that's been going for the past ten years.

Wait, what the...? October 10, 2012 Posted by Mookie
If you saw today's comic and said something along the lines of, "wait, what?!" then I consider this a successful update.

Things should be (somewhat) clearer tomorrow.

Speaking of updates, I added more pictures to my deviantArt photo gallery! The lovely Belle Gunz of The Slaughterhouse Sweethearts is a natural in front of the camera, and most of the poses are her just being herself with little to no direction from me. It was a real pleasure to work with her and I hope you folks enjoy the pictures we took.
(Note: There is nudity in my photo gallery, though you have to be a member of deviantArt to see those pictures.)

I've been avoiding politics down here in the news box, but I just want to take this moment to remind you fine folks to register to vote. Then get informed about the issues that matter to you, and go vote. That's all.

In other, nerdier news, I'm still getting used to playing a volus in Mass Effect 3 multiplayer, but their character portraits alone are so friggin' adorable. Poor little fellas have to stand on crates to be seen!

That's all from me for now.

Not anymore. October 9, 2012 Posted by Mookie
Illusions and enchantments don't work on Dominic.

Dominic is guilty of being a "puppet master," and he's paid for it before.

Dominic has been known to mouth off to people who can hurt him.

I had the pleasure to photograph the lovely Belle Gunz of The Slaughterhouse Sweethearts yesterday. I'll have pictures up from our shoot in my deviantArt gallery in a few days.

I'll have more news regarding my 2013 convention schedule within the next few days as well.

Endless possibilities... October 8, 2012 Posted by Mookie
As Halloween comes ever closer I'm asking myself the most important question in all of October.

What's going to be my Halloween costume this year?

Last year it was relatively easy. My wife and I held a Halloween costume wedding and I had to look (somewhat) fancy. That basic guideline helped shape my "monster getting married" outfit. But this year I don't have any restrictions! I can be whatever I want! The number of choices is becoming daunting as I find myself flooded with possibilities.

What I'm considering:
- Headless Horseman (with a pumpkin for a head)
- Scarecrow
- The Devil (old school, like with a red cape and pitchfork)
- Superhero
- Robot

What I'm not even considering:
- Zombie
- Werewolf
- T-shirt that says "this is my costume"
- Gangster

Is it obvious that I love Halloween?

That's all from me for now.

Umm... HE did it. October 5, 2012 Posted by Mookie
Sorry about the lack of a news post yesterday. It was an especially slow news day and I just didn't have anything to talk about. While I often praise days like that, I wasn't feeling wordy enough to stretch that out and fill the news box.

It's been a pleasantly mellow start to October in general. So I'll finish the week with some (hopefully) interesting tidbits as we head into the weekend:

- Next week I'll be looking to add more photos to my neglected deviantArt gallery. I'll keep you folks posted.

- I'll also be updating the criminally neglected Fan Art pages. I've just come across some submissions from months ago that got lost in the ol' inbox shuffle.

- My wife and I are looking forward to actually being able to display Halloween decorations. We're also excited because our new neighborhood has lots of children, so we're already stockpiling candy for the trick-or-treaters.

- Borderlands 2 has been wickedly fun so far. I enjoy playing a Siren primarily, but gunzerking is very satisfying, too.

He slimed me. October 3, 2012 Posted by Mookie
Poor Luna.

Every time Dejah casts one of his teleportation spells...

...Luna gets slimed.

After all these years that gag is still funny to me. Maybe it comes from watching too much You Can't Do That On Television as a kid? I don't know.

Some other old friends have returned to help Miranda and Luna with the mass teleportation. Runcible Spoon and Cassafinn Sunderliss, as well as Fierla, who often lurks in the background but also has contributed to significant moments in the past. She looks a little different nowadays, as my designs for the nagasta have somewhat evolved over time.

In these upcoming final months, expect more characters to make return appearances, too!

How can I help? October 2, 2012 Posted by Mookie
Taz doesn't like authority.

Taz doesn't like Pam. He's called her an "uptight church girl" before, or something similar.

Taz's stubbornness doesn't last long after someone's called him out on his "knee-jerk rebellious" nature.

I'm still recovering from the incredible awesomeness of Revenge of the Robot Battle Nuns, the mind-blowing burlesque show I was honored to be a part of as the narrator. Okay, I may have also puked green virus slime all over my wife's chest, but I was mostly the narrator. It was the brain-child of my friend, contributor to the site, and ever-ready photography model Tarah; along with her troupe The Slaughterhouse Sweethearts.

And finally, the video for "Astral Body" by Between The Buried And Me is pretty stellar. No pun intended.
