I'm back from vacation, and you might say that it rocked.

I do hope you folks enjoyed the five days of filler art last week! There were so many great, imaginative submissions that I felt guilty having to pick only five to showcase. If you submitted a piece but it didn't end up on the front page last week, it will be added to the Fan Art pages this week.

If you submitted an original Wild Edge monster and would like it to make an appearance somewhere in this storyline, simply e-mail me with your written permission to do so. I can't guarantee I'll be able to put every original monster submitted into the comic, either in the background or as an obstacle, but if you'd like to see your monster in the Wild Edge just let me know. I'll do my best to sneak your creatures in there somewhere.

Choosing only five submissions to go up this past week was harder than I could have imagined. I would've put them all up if I was going on vacation for longer.

If your submission was not displayed on the front page this week it will be added to the Fan Art pages next week. It may not have gone up as filler but I still want everyone to see your amazing works!

If you submitted an idea for a new Wild Edge creature, stay tuned next week for information on how you can get it to make a cameo in the comic!

I've got a case of pre-convention crazies. I know it. Ever since I drew this strip I've been saying "crunch crunch Bort" to myself every so often for no reason at all. Sometimes a summer vacation just can't come soon enough.

I'm at OTAKON today and the entire weekend! Stop by to say "hi" or simply witness a case of crazies taking its full effect on an aging nerd.

Next week there will be five pieces of Wild Edge fan art filler in place of a comic. It was very, very difficult to choose only five submissions to be showcased. Your portrayals of my characters were flattering as always, and your original Wild Edge monsters blew me away.

If your submission does not go up on the front page next week it will be put up in the Fan Art pages.

It's a little strange having the protagonist of a story able to do death-defying stunts (no pun intended) after eight years of writing a main character who could probably be physically dominated by a ten year old. It's neat.

Today is the last day to get your submissions in for next week's "five days of filler art" while I'm on vacation with my fiancee. The deadline for submission will be today at 4pm Eastern Standard US time.

This weekend I'll be at OTAKON, which ought to be three days of insanity, and after that it's vacation time... but my only regret is that I only get to choose five pieces to showcase because, as always, I'm loving each and every piece of work you folks are sending my way.

I must have a thing for mountains bursting up out of the ground. Only this time, since it's in the Wild Edge, the mountain had to be on that back of a monster.

It's days like this that I adore the medium of comics.

Speaking of monsters, keep those submissions coming in for the five days of fan art filler I'll be posting after OTAKON! I've seen some really great, imaginative work already and I can't wait to see some more. If you're interested in submitting a piece to be considered for one of the five pieces to go up while I'm on vacation, just e-mail me your Wild Edge related work by Thursday, July 29. It can be of any of the characters or native creatures that you like, and you can even make up your own Wild Edge monster!

This weekend I'll be at the craziness that is OTAKON. I won't be doing panels or anything like that. I'll simply be down in the Artists Alley all weekend long, putting in the long hours and trying to stay somewhat sane. Stop by and say "hi" or just watch me slowly slip into madness.

Today's comic originally had dialogue in every single panel, but it all felt forced and crummy. I feel the silence worked a lot better.

My fiancee and I will be going on vacation for a week after OTAKON and, instead of five days worth of crummy filler doodles, I think everyone would prefer five days worth of fan art from you fine and talented readers!

If you're interested in submitting fan art for the week-long filler just e-mail me your work and I'll select five of my favorite pieces to go up while I'm gone. I only ask that any submissions be related to the current storyline set in the Wild Edge. It could be art of Stunt, Bort, the poachers, the creatures we've seen in the Wild Edge so far or anything else you can imagine. Literally. If you want to make up your own Wild Edge monster, go for it.

Oh well. It's not like I named them "pikachus."

Picked up a couple of new comic books yesterday.
Here are a couple of my favorites.

I like the old school, retro feel of Time Masters: Vanishing Point. Maybe I'm a nerd for time travel. Maybe I'm a little gay for Rip Hunter. Maybe both.

The new creative team behind Power Girl is good, even though I desperately miss the team of Palmiotti & Conner. The snappy writing and sharp artwork of Winick and Basri gives me hope that this series isn't going anywhere.

I'm loving the new Thunderbolts roster, even though I desperately miss Radioactive Man and Speedball/Penance. Man-Thing's role strangely works and Luke Cage is a solid leader, but I don't know how I feel about Songbird's new haircut. I hope that remains my biggest complaint about this series because it's about time there was a likable roster.

The new Deadpool cracked me up. Again. Maybe I'm a nerd for the merc with a mouth. Maybe I'm a little gay for Daniel Way. Maybe both.

I like Brightest Day. A lot. However, somehow I get the feeling that in the attempt to make it not "all bright and shiny" they introduced more gruesome villains and horrific murder than anything during Blackest Night. That being said, it's still good to see Aquaman, Martian Manhunter and Hawkman & Hawkgirl back among the living. Even if things are more disturbing because of it.

The Prince of Power mini-series is rocking my socks off. I was a big mythology nerd as a kid and seeing Amadeus Cho (one of the more unique new heroes to come along in a long time) take on avatars and gods from different pantheons gives me a solid nerd-gasm. His defeat of Sekhmet still has me laughing.

Sometimes the universe gives you little gifts that you just have to accept. For example, I named one of the poachers "Jaxon" when this storyline started. The winner of the charity auction at ConnectiCon is named "Michael."

I just could not resist putting their names together in today's comic. I think the universe wanted me to. Maybe.

Other than that, I have no interesting news to report today. I'm fine with that, because in my opinion no news is good news.

Michael the poacher was brutally killed today because a gentleman of the same name and (somewhat) similar appearance was the winning bidder at this year's ConnectiCon Webcomic Auction, and the prize was a named cameo in the comic. I also promised that whoever won would likely be killed in a gruesome manner.

I hope you're happy with your grotesque death, Michael!

This month's Donation Wallpaper is up for July! It's the picture I drew for the Webcomics Auction for the Gulf, and while the winning bidder of that charity auction now possesses the original artwork, I figured I would offer digital wallpaper versions for everybody else! I hope you like it.

I've been doodling this little puff-balls with feet for ages. It's great to put them into the comic, not only because I think they're adorable but they're remarkably easy to draw. Hee hee.

A friend once looked at them and said to me, "I think those are mookies, Mookie." While the name was tempting, I didn't have it in me to name these little fellas after myself. Still, every so often the idea bangs around in the back of my head.

As for what these little things are called, and why everyone is so scared of them... you'll have to come back tomorrow to find out!

I don't have much in the way of plans this weekend, and considering how crazy ConnectiCon was last weekend I think I'm going to enjoy some time doing nothing... except preparing for OTAKON in a few weeks.

I'll be going on vacation with Alyssa at the beginning of August, right after Otakon, so I'm going to be needing some filler. More details on that the closer we get to the end of this month.

This sort of thing happens every single time I watch a nature show. Something cute shows up and within minutes it's snatched up by some bad-ass ambush predator. Every time I see a baby anything in a nature show the first thing I think is, "That baby's gonna get eaten."

Nature is brutal, man.

As for the poor "tosser," let it be known that I am well aware of the slang meaning of its name. Let it also be known that I picked that name because 1) it tossed people around with its face and 2) my fiancee really likes the band called The Tossers.

Let it also be known that she is not happy with me about today's comic. I may or may not have spent the night on the couch.

Engagement is brutal, man.

The slimes in today's comic are a nod to those who came to see me at ConnectiCon this past weekend, notably the "Dominic Deegan Q&A" panel. Somehow the concept of posh slimes came up and for the next three days I was asked to put them in the strip.

After I doodled a couple of slimes with a top hat, monocle and gentleman's moustache for someone I was sold on the concept.

So I put them in the comic after all because... well... because I wanted to and slimes oozing around with posh accents makes me laugh. Hee hee!

And so with Chris's death today I continue the tradition of killing people who win a named appearance in the comic via ConnectiCon's Webcomic Charity Auction. Chris won two years ago. This year's winner may not have such a long comic life span. Tee hee.

I love my metal, but it's not the only music I love. Stripped down rock and roll is another love of mine, and I want to turn you folks on to a couple of great rock bands I've been listening to.

Absinthe Junk is a great rock band headed up by the very lovely Blair, who is not only a phenomenal singer but also a good friend of mine. I've had the pleasure of listening to their album "Living Ghosts" and find it a solid listen from start to finish. My favorite tracks are "Commercialized Waste" and "Dragonflies in Hurricanes." Give this band your ear and you won't be disappointed.

I've mentioned Planetoid before but I feel compelled to mention them again. They performed at this year's ConnectiCon where I was able to pick up their album, "Shadow of the Planetoid." Their presentation is from the deepest reaches of outer space, but their music is deeply rooted in good old rock and roll. With classic, hard-driving riffs and a great growl in the singer's voice, this is an album I've been listening to since I picked it up.
